Easy Beginner Beeswax Lip Balm Recipe

Making your own beeswax lip balms is quick and easy and they make great gifts for friends and family.

Making beeswax lip balms requires very little time or skill. The ingredients are easy to find, though some such as beeswax may need to be bought online.

You Will Need

  • 5x 10ml Lip Balm Pots
  • Pyrex jug
  • Small Pan
  • Water
  • Cutlery knife
  • Tissue

  • 10 tsp Castor oil
  • 2.5 tsp Beeswax
  • 2.5 tsp Essential oil / flavour oil
  • 2.5 tsp Almond oil
  • 2.5 tsp Grape seed oil
This is more than enough to make 5 pots of lip balm. It is entirely up to you which you choose out of flavour oils or essential oils. If you choose to use essential oils try to use ones from edible foods, such as lemon oil, rather than wood oils like sandalwood.

Melt the Oils

Fill the pan with about 1 inch of water and set it to warm on the stove. Place the pyrex jug in the centre of the pan so that it is surrounded by the water. When the water is boiling add the wax and all the oils except for the essential or flavour oils. Use the knife to slowly stir the oils until the wax has completely melted. Take jug off the heat and place it to one side to cool slightly.

Fill The Pots

Once the jug is off the heat prepare the lip balm pots so that they are all ready to be filled. Quickly add the essential/ flavour oil to the melted oils and thoroughly stir this in. Immediately pour the mixture into the pots and place their lids on while they cool down. You need to be quick here because as soon as the essential / flavour oils are mixed with the hot oils they will begin to evaporate and will lose their scent.

Don't move the lip balms for at least 30 mins while they cool down so that the beeswax can set smoothly.

Clean Up

Always use a tissue to remove the excess oils and wax from the jug before it's washed in hot soapy water. This way you prevent too much wax from being washed down the plug which can block drain pipes.

Your lip balms are ready to use as soon as they have cooled down.

Substituting Ingredients

You can substitute any of the ingredients for what you have in store so long as their consistency is the same. For example you can swap almond oil for sunflower oil because they are both liquid oils. Or you could swap beeswax for Shea butter because they are both solid at room temperature.
